Announcing the Injured Workers' Speaker School in Sarnia!

Welcome!

Please find attached below an introduction to the Sarnia Injured Workers Speaker School.
We are working out of the OHCOW office in Point Edwards.

Our intention with the speaker school, a program which has been very successful in communities such as Toronto, Thunder Bay and Hamilton, is to teach inured workers and friends of injured workers the skills of public speaking, speaking to the media, the history of workers' compensation, and advocating for health and safety standards in the context of a community that relies on industry for their economic welfare.

Classes will have guest speakers speaking from their area of expertise. Curriculum will include: environmental exposure, public speaking, the Aamjiwnaang First Nation environmental movement, speaking to the media, and a history of workers' compensation.

We are currently recruiting students... If you are interested, please contact me to fill out a registration form.

Our timeline is a 12 week class starting October 3rd, Monday nights, 6:30-8:30, with free food offered at 6:00pm.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have: iwss_sarnia@zoho.com or 519-337-4627 x2335

Hope to see you all there!

Announcing the Injured Workers' Speaker School in Sarnia!

We are very happy to announce that the Canadian Environmental Law Association, in partnership with the Occupational Health Clinic for Ontario Workers in Sarnia, Community Legal Assistance Sarnia, and Ontario Network of Injured Workers Group, are launching an Injured Workers’ Speaker School in Sarnia this September.
Through an intensive twelve week program, the Injured Workers’ Speaker School will develop leaders who will use their own stories and the knowledge they learn through the program to lobby and fight for change.
We are now recruiting students for the school and we need your help! In this unique initiative, funded by Legal Aid Ontario, students can expect to learn about public speaking, speaking to the media, the history of the injured worker's system, information about environmental exposures in the workplace, and First Nations environmental movement. We hope that students will include injured workers, surviving family members, and members of the Aamjiwnaang First Nation. Students will be given the tools they need to work together, and inspire others, to create change and advocate on behalf of themselves and others.

Classes are to begin the last week of September. Students should be available one night a week for a period of 12 weeks. The class will take place Wednesday evenings at the Ontario Health Clinics for Ontario Workers, 171 Kendall Street, Point Edwards.
If you are an injured worker or a family member who has been impacted by a workplace injury and would like to work with your peers to learn speaking and advocacy skills, please consider taking part in our speaker's school. You can contact Renee Griffin at rgriffin@cela.ca or Susan Toth, the program coordinator, at iwss_sarnia@zoho.com, or at 519-337-4627 x2335 for more information.

Please feel free to share this information and refer any students who you think may be interested in attending our school to Renee or Susan.
I hope to work with you on this exciting initiative!
